What gender pay gap?

Interesting article in the Wall Street Journal about the male-female wage gap.  Apparently there isn't one...  I've not seen it reported elsewhere so thought I'd encourage others to go and read :-)

The ONS produced statistics on all this for the UK, there is indeed no particular gender pay gap.

But there is very much a "mothers vs everybody else" pay gap, which we could alleviate by paying higher child benefit; or we can accept the fact that most mothers are married and so share their husbands' incomes anyway - so ultimately, there is no particular "standard of living gap" between people.

Out of interest, given that we hear so often about people on benefits having lots of kids because it'll get them a bigger house or more child benefit - has such a comparison been carried out for those who are out of work?

Does it really make you better off to have lots of kids if you're on benefits?
